Veteran Actor Dies During Christmas Carol Performance
Veteran stage actor Julien Arnold has passed away at the age of 60 following a medical emergency while performing at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton, Canada.
Arnold, who was playing several roles, including Marley and Mr. Fezziwig, in the production of ‘A Christmas Carol’, fell ill on November 24 during the performance. Despite prompt medical attention from paramedics, who arrived at 8:28 p.m., Arnold was unable to be revived and passed away at the theatre.
The Citadel Theatre issued a heartfelt tribute to Arnold, praising him as “a gifted performer” who was deeply loved by the community. The theatre also announced that this season’s performances of ‘A Christmas Carol’ would be dedicated to his memory. A spokesperson for the theatre shared, “Julien’s passing is a profound loss to his family, friends, fellow Carol company members, Citadel staff, and the Edmonton community he loved so dearly. His presence brought joy, heart, and depth to every role, and his artistic contributions – and big hugs – will be deeply missed.”
Arnold, a respected figure in Canadian theatre, had an impressive academic background. He graduated from the University of Alberta with both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in fine arts. He was also a founding member of the Free Will Players, the company behind Edmonton’s Freewill Shakespeare Festival. Festival artistic director David Horak described Arnold as having “the ability to create characters that had the biggest hearts in the world,” adding that he was just as kind-hearted in real life.
The Punctuate Theatre, where Arnold’s wife, Sheiny Satanove, serves as managing director, also paid tribute to him. They called him “a cherished member of the Edmonton theatre community whose warmth, talent, and generosity touched so many lives” and remarked that he left them “as he lived — immersed in his passion for theatre.”
In light of Arnold’s passing, the Citadel Theatre has adjusted its upcoming performances to allow cast and crew time to mourn. Additionally, a fundraising campaign to support Arnold’s widow has already raised over $55,350 of its $75,000 goal.
The cause of Arnold’s death has not yet been publicly disclosed by officials.
