Obaseki Hits Back At Okpebholo’s ‘Lies’
Former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has strongly criticized his successor, Governor Monday Okpebholo, accusing him of attempting to tarnish his reputation with false narratives and baseless allegations.
The comments were made through a statement issued by Obaseki’s Media Adviser, Crusoe Osagie.
The controversy arose after Bernard Joman, acting chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), alleged that Obaseki failed to implement a ₦70,000 minimum wage. Responding to the claim, Osagie described the accusation as “mischievous and utterly ridiculous,” emphasizing that the new minimum wage had been implemented in May 2024 under Obaseki’s leadership.
Osagie stated, “It is public knowledge how former Governor Godwin Obaseki set the pace for discussions on improved worker welfare by initiating the ongoing efforts by various states to raise their minimum wage to ₦70,000 or above.” He further noted that Edo civil servants had been enjoying the new minimum wage since its introduction, adding, “What civil servants expect from the governor-select is a further increase to ₦100,000 monthly, considering inflation, not unintelligent lies and propaganda.”
The statement accused Okpebholo and his political allies of lacking a development agenda and instead focusing on discrediting Obaseki’s achievements. Osagie said, “Okpebholo’s only effort at governance has been to tour Obaseki’s projects and attempt to discredit them, doing a poor job at executing his mischief.”
He also criticized Okpebholo for allegedly using the Nigerian Observer Newspapers as a propaganda tool, pointing out that the organization had only been revitalized due to Obaseki’s reforms. “But for Obaseki’s Midas touch, the Nigerian Observer would still be operating in a dilapidated environment with outdated printing equipment,” he added.
Osagie dismissed Okpebholo’s actions as shallow and ineffective, remarking, “His attempts to discredit Obaseki are crumbling like a pack of cards and exposing him as a shallow politician.” He advised the governor to focus on plans for Edo State’s development rather than engaging in propaganda.
The statement concluded by reminding Okpebholo that gaining public trust would require genuine leadership, not misinformation, and urged him to shift his attention from Obaseki to fulfilling the people’s mandate.
