Why Northern Governors Want Tinubu To Hold Back Tax Bills” – Gov Zulum
Governor Babagana Zulum has stated that northern governors need more time to deliberate on the tax reforms proposed by President Bola Tinubu.
The Borno State Governor explained that they suggested the withdrawal of the bills to allow for further consultations.
Speaking on ‘Sunday Politics’ on Channels Television, Zulum clarified that the northern governors were not opposed to President Tinubu’s administration. He pointed out that the North strongly supported Tinubu during the 2023 elections, giving him over 60% of their votes, which demonstrates their loyalty.
Zulum expressed concerns about the proposed tax reforms, emphasizing that they seemed to favor only Lagos and Rivers States while disadvantaging other regions, including the North. He said, “On this tax issue, there are a lot of misconceptions. We felt that the VAT provision in the tax law—based on the calculations that we did—only Lagos and Rivers States will benefit from this scheme. We did our own research and concluded that we would lose.”
Addressing claims that he is working against the President, Zulum reaffirmed his loyalty to Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC). “I am a strong member of APC. If you can count two governors before 2019 and 2023 who were in support of Tinubu, you can mention Governor Zulum. I was the first governor to come out publicly and say that power must go to the South,” he said.
Zulum also rejected rumors of northern opposition to Tinubu, noting, “Unfortunately, the President was told by many that the North was against him. 60.2 per cent of his votes came from the North.”
