Eminem's mother Debbie Nelson

Debbie Nelson, the mother of rapper Eminem, passed away at the age of 69. The news was confirmed by Dennis Dennehy, a representative for Eminem.

The cause of her death was not disclosed, though she had been battling lung cancer.

Debbie’s relationship with her son, Marshall Mathers III, known professionally as Eminem, was well-known, especially due to the rapper’s lyrics. In his famous 2002 song “Cleaning Out My Closet,” Eminem criticized his mother, referencing her struggles with prescription medication and accusing her of mistreating him during his childhood. The song included the line, “Witnessin’ your momma poppin’ prescription pills in the kitchen. Bitchin’ that someone’s always goin’ through her purse and shit’s missin’… My whole life I was made to believe I was sick when I wasn’t.”

Despite the harsh lyrics, Eminem’s feelings seemed to soften over time. In the Oscar-winning song “Lose Yourself,” from the movie “8 Mile,” he referenced his mother in a less critical light, mentioning “mom’s spaghetti.” This song won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Song in 2004.

Throughout the years, Debbie Nelson took legal action against her son, filing two defamation lawsuits over his public statements. She also wrote a memoir in 2008 titled ‘My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem’, in which she attempted to clarify her side of the story and share details about Eminem’s early life.

In the months leading up to her death, Eminem had achieved further success, winning Best Hip Hop Act at the 2024 MTV EMAs and being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.

Additionally, Eminem announced that he would soon be a grandfather, revealing that his daughter, Hailie Jade, was expecting a child in a heartfelt music video.
