AY Clarifies Netflix’s Position On Nigerian Market
Nigerian comedian and actor, Ayo Makun, also known as AY, has shared his views on the recent controversy regarding Netflix’s alleged decision to stop funding Nigerian original films.
This controversy began when Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan claimed that Netflix had ceased commissioning Nigerian content. This raised concerns about Netflix’s commitment to the Nigerian market.
In an interview with Nollywood on Radio, AY clarified that Netflix is not exiting Nigeria but is facing challenges. He explained that Netflix might be rethinking its strategy due to financial difficulties, as its spending on Nigerian content has been higher than the earnings from the region.
AY suggested that Netflix’s struggles in Nigeria are largely due to the common practice of subscription sharing and low individual subscription rates. He pointed out that despite Nigeria’s large population of over 200 million, the number of Netflix subscribers in the country is relatively small, estimated at only around 300,000.
He continued, “I had a meeting with Netflix recently, and it was never mentioned to me that they are opting out of business in this part of the world. At the last meeting, we discussed my next project and how they can be a part of it. I also do not want to believe strongly that they are leaving Nigeria. There is no way they would leave just the way people are saying it.”
AY further explained, “The truth is if you are doing business in a particular region and you are not making money but spending much more than you are making, you would want to re-strategize. That is what is going on with their system and structure.”
He emphasized that the issue goes beyond filmmakers, highlighting the role of Nigerian consumers. “For example, the subscription basis for Netflix in a country that has a population of over 200 million people is just about 300,000, so there is a leakage somewhere that needs to be corrected. You would see a person with a Netflix subscription sharing with several people, so that’s the problem. It is not just about the filmmakers.”
