Mathias Pogba, the older brother of former Juventus player Paul Pogba, has been sentenced to three years in prison for his role in an £11 million blackmail plot targeting the footballer.

A Paris court ruled that Mathias will serve one year of his sentence under electronic monitoring, with the remaining two years suspended. He has also been fined £16,500.

The case began in September 2022 when Paul Pogba reported that several childhood friends, including Mathias, attempted to extort money from him. The group allegedly demanded payment for “protection services” they claimed to have provided for over a decade. The allegations led to a judicial investigation on charges including attempted extortion and organized crime.

During the investigation, Mathias Pogba voluntarily surrendered to authorities and was detained until December 2022. During this time, he was barred from contacting Paul or their mother.

Following the trial, Mathias was convicted of attempted extortion for putting pressure on Paul, his family, and business associates to pay the substantial sum.

Five other individuals linked to Mathias were also found guilty of involvement in the blackmail scheme. They faced charges including extortion, kidnapping, and organized crime. Their sentences ranged up to eight years in prison, with fines between £16,500 and £33,000.

Meanwhile, Paul Pogba is facing his own challenges in his career. After his contract with Juventus was terminated due to a doping violation, he is currently serving an 18-month ban effective from August 2023. Pogba is aiming to return to professional football by March 2025.
