Human rights lawyer and activist, Dele Farotimi, has been granted bail in the sum of ₦30 million by a Magistrate Court in Ekiti State.

The ruling on bail for Dele Farotimi follows his recent remand in a correctional facility in Ado Ekiti, the state capital.

Arriving at the court premises at around 9:45 am on Friday, Farotimi was escorted in a prison van under tight police security. As he stepped out, he raised his hands in gratitude to a cheering crowd gathered outside the courthouse.

Presiding Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun had previously reserved the bail ruling until December 20, ordering Dele Farotimi’s detention during the last court session. At Friday’s proceedings, Farotimi pleaded not guilty to a 14-count charge filed against him by the police.

GWG.ng reports that the charges, centered on alleged defamation, were contested by Farotimi’s legal counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika. The defense team filed a preliminary objection, arguing that the charges were baseless and that defamation was not recognized as a criminal offense under the Ekiti State Criminal Law of 2021.

The case revolves around allegations that Farotimi defamed Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Afe Babalola. Despite the legal battle, the activist remains resolute, with his supporters rallying behind him.
