The tragedies trailing the stampede for food in Nigeria has taken a new twist with the APC lampooning Peter Obi for supposedly politicising the tragedies.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has lampooned 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi for allegedly politicizing the recent tragic stampede in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The incident occurred during a children’s funfair held at the Islamic High School, Bashorun, organized by Queen Naomi Shikemi, the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife. Initial reports confirmed that 35 people, mostly children, lost their lives, with six others critically injured. By Friday, the death toll had reportedly risen to 40, with many victims still hospitalized.

Reacting to the heartbreaking event, Peter Obi expressed deep sorrow and described the tragedy as a reflection of systemic issues in Nigeria. According to him, the incident highlighted the harsh inequalities in the country that leave children vulnerable to such dangers while scrambling for basic Christmas gifts.

In a post on social media, Obi stated, “This devastating loss reveals the severe hardship and inequality in our nation. These children should not have faced such risks for something as simple as gifts.”

The APC sribe Ajibola Bashiru, however, took issue with Obi’s comments, accusing him of exploiting the deaths from the stampede for political gain. On his X account, Bashiru wrote, “Peter Obi is consistently inconsistent. I would have been disappointed if he did not try to play politics with the tragic incident.”

The remarks have sparked discussions online, with various opinions on the response to the tragedy and the broader challenges it reflects in Nigeria.
