Abuja Train Users Jolted As NRC Suspends Warri-Itakpe Service

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) announced on Monday that the Warri-Itakpe train service has been suspended and with it jolting the holiday plans of Abuja based train users of the service to Delta and other parts of the South-South.

This decision came after a minor derailment on Sunday at Okpara station, located in the Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State. The derailment, which occurred around 10 p.m., left passengers stranded overnight.

In a statement released on Monday, Yakub Mahmood, the NRC Director of Public Relations, explained that engineers had been sent to the site to repair the track. He assured the public that the service would resume soon. The statement read: “The management of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) hereby informs the general public, especially our valued passengers that ply the Warri-Itakpe route, that following the minor derailment yesterday at the Okpara station, the service will resume shortly as our team of engineers are at the site of the accident to ensure the track is restored anytime soon.”

While the Warri-Itakpe service was temporarily suspended, trains traveling in the opposite direction, from Itakpe to Warri (Ujewe), are expected to resume as scheduled later in the afternoon.

While there has been no word on the time frame for the restoration of the suspended service, the hope of holiday makers to use the Warri-Itakpe train service for their return will be an issue.

Additionally, the federal government has declared Wednesday, December 25, Thursday, December 26, 2024, and Wednesday, January 1, 2025, as public holidays for Christmas, Boxing Day, and New Year celebrations.

This announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.
