Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has pardoned Segun Olowookere, who was sentenced to death for armed robbery but recently claimed by some to have been a fowl thief, Sunday Morakinyo.

Governor Ademola Adeleke issued the order to free Sunday Morakinyo who had recently garnered publicity over claims that he was sentenced to death for stealing a fowl. He made the proclamation to free him and 52 others in a statement on his X account.

GWG.ng reports that the Osun State judiciary has recently clarified that Segun Olowookere was actually sentenced to death for armed robbery.

Governor Adeleke revealed the the duo was among 53 inmates granted pardon following recommendations from the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy. This move is in line with his constitutional powers as outlined in Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

“In line with the recommendations of the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy and in exercise of the power conferred on me by paragraph (a), (c), and (d) of subsection (i) of section 212 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (As Amended), I am pleased to extend my grace and mercy unto 53 convicts serving various convictions within the Nigerian Correctional Service,” Governor Adeleke said.

The statement detailed the categories of pardons granted:

30 inmates had the remainder of their sentences remitted.

12 inmates were granted outright pardons.

6 inmates on death row had their sentences commuted to outright release, including Olowookere and Morakinyo.

The governor also commuted one inmate’s death sentence to 15 years imprisonment after spending over a decade in custody.

Olowookere and Morakinyo were arrested in 2010 for breaking into the homes of a police officer and another resident, stealing valuables. In 2014, Justice Falola of the Osun State High Court sentenced the duo to death by hanging after they were found guilty of burglary and theft.
