Prominent political activist and lawyer Dele Farotimi in a video message has emotionally thanked Nigerians for their overwhelming support following his release from Ekiti prison

Dele Farotimi has issued a video expressing thanks to Nigerians who defied sentiments and segments to rally round for his release from prison.

GWG.ng reports that the activist was arrested over defamation allegations leveled by senior lawyer Afe Babalola, arising from allegations raised in Farotimi’s book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System.

The book which critiques systemic failings in the country’s legal structure according to Afe Babalola defamed him.

After securing bail set at ₦50 million, Farotimi publicly expressed his gratitude, attributing his freedom to the solidarity of Nigerians. Speaking in a heartfelt video that has since gone viral, Farotimi emphasized the power of unity and its role in overcoming Nigeria’s divisive tendencies.

“We stopped being human because we became Nigerians. They divided us, and we fell for it. But because you didn’t see me as a Yoruba man, because you didn’t see me as a Christian, you spoke for me,” Dele Farotimi said, his voice breaking with emotion.

Farotimi highlighted the collective voice of Nigerians as the force that shielded him from what he described as the harsh realities of a fractured justice system. “Because you spoke, Nigeria couldn’t happen to me. You found your voices, and together, you couldn’t be silenced,” he added tearfully.
