Former Nigerian Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has criticized Niger Republic’s military leader, Abdourahamane Tchiani, over allegations that Nigeria is collaborating with France to destabilize his country.

In a strongly-worded statement shared on his social media platform, Fani-Kayode dismissed Tchiani’s claims as “infantile, mendacious, and asinine,” emphasizing that Nigeria has no involvement in supporting terrorist organizations or participating in any plots to undermine Niger.

“If Nigeria wanted to destabilize Niger Republic, I do not believe we would need France or any terrorist organization to do so,” Fani-Kayode said. He reiterated his longstanding belief that Western powers were behind the rise of terrorism in West Africa over the last 15 years, asserting that Nigeria has always been a victim of such acts and not a perpetrator.

Tchiani recently alleged that President Bola Tinubu and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu were collaborating with France to sponsor terrorist groups aimed at destabilizing Niger. He further claimed that French military bases exist in Nigeria—allegations Fani-Kayode categorically rejected.

“Tchiani’s accusations are a squalid attempt to sow division within Nigeria and undermine the Tinubu administration,” he stated. Fani-Kayode urged the Federal Government to respond decisively, suggesting that Nigeria consider more stringent measures if the provocations persist.

He also highlighted Nigeria’s superior defense capabilities, pointing out that the combined military budgets of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso do not amount to 25% of Nigeria’s defense expenditure.

Fani-Kayode called for caution from Tchiani, warning that any further provocations could lead to consequences. “We are under no obligation to show restraint when we are being undermined and maligned,” he declared.

This marks the latest chapter in a series of tensions between Nigeria and Niger, following the coup that installed Tchiani as Niger’s military head of state and disrupted regional stability.
