List Of Popular Phones Losing WhatsApp Support
By Gideon Ayeni
As the New Year begins, WhatsApp has announced it will no longer support certain older smartphones, leaving users of aging devices with limited options to keep the app functional.
This change affects both the standard WhatsApp app and WhatsApp Business, as the platform updates its compatibility to align with newer operating systems.
Starting January 1, 2025, WhatsApp will stop working on devices running Android KitKat and earlier versions as support will no longer be provided. While some users may still be able to update their operating systems to continue using the app, several older models no longer receive official updates, effectively cutting off support and compatibility with WhatsApp.
Here are the Android devices impacted by the January 1 update:
Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014
HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V
Later in the year, iPhone users with older models will face similar challenges. From May 5, 2025, WhatsApp will no longer support iOS versions earlier than 15.1. While some iPhone users can simply update their devices, those stuck on iOS 12.5.7 will lose access to the app. This change affects the following iPhone models:
iPhone 5s
iPhone 6
iPhone 6 Plus
Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, emphasized that these updates are necessary to maintain the app’s security, functionality, and compatibility with modern devices.
Users of affected devices are advised to check their phone’s operating system and explore upgrade options if needed. For those unable to update their smartphones, this marks the end of WhatsApp’s support on their devices, urging them to consider upgrading to newer models to stay connected.
