Catholic priest arrested for shooting teen

A tragic incident unfolded during a New Year’s Mass at St. Columbus Catholic Church in Amaimo, Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State, where a teenager lost his life after a shooting incident allegedly triggered by the officiating priest.

The boy reportedly ignited fireworks inside the church during the January 1, 2025, service, leading to an unfortunate sequence of events.

Witnesses allege that Rev. Father Joseph Enyinaya, the officiating priest, reacted by drawing a revolver and shooting the boy in the midst of an ongoing catholic mass. The shocking event has left the local community in grief, with many demanding a thorough investigation to clarify what transpired.

A post shared on a Facebook page titled “For The Love Of Anambra” claimed that the priest’s reaction was immediate after the fireworks disrupted the service.

The Imo State Police have since taken Rev. Father Enyinaya into custody. Police spokesperson Henry Okoye confirmed that the teenager’s body has been recovered and moved to the Atta Ikeduru Mortuary.

“The priest has been arrested, and the body of the boy has been deposited at the mortuary. We have initiated a detailed investigation to uncover the full details of this incident,” Okoye stated.

This tragic occurrence has raised numerous questions about the use of firearms in places of worship and the circumstances leading to such a devastating outcome. The investigation is ongoing.
