How Portable’s ‘Ibadan POP’ Comment Backfired (Video)
By Gideon Ayeni
Controversial Nigerian street-pop singer, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, failed to perform at the recent concert of renowned Fuji musician, Alhaji Taye Currency, in Ibadan, Oyo State, due to safety concerns after her POP comment.
The drama surrounding Portable’s absence stems from a viral video he shared last year, where he criticized residents of Ibadan. The singer had mocked the city’s housing standards, claiming that many homes lacked basic roofing finishes like Plaster-of-Paris (POP), a feature he boasted was common in Lagos and other parts of the country.

Portable’s POP comment sparked outrage among Ibadan residents, many of whom expressed their displeasure on social media. Although Portable later issued a public apology and announced his invitation to perform at Taye Currency’s concert, the controversy lingered.
Ahead of the event, fans on social media warned Portable against attending the concert, citing unresolved tensions over his remarks. Despite his assurances, concerns over potential unrest led to heightened caution.
Reports revealed that Portable arrived in Ibadan and checked into a hotel near the Palms Mall, the venue of the concert. However, he was unable to take the stage as planned due to escalating security concerns.
Neither Portable nor Taye Currency has issued an official statement regarding the missed performance.
