Why Chioma Ikokwu’s Property Was Demolished – Lagos Govt
The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has explained its decision to demolish the property of Chioma Ikokwu, a reality TV star, in Lekki, Lagos.
According to the agency, the process followed all legal protocols, contrary to claims made in a viral video.
Chioma Ikokwu a star in the ‘Real Housewives of Lagos’, show had alleged that LASBCA officials barred her from retrieving items from the demolished site and used police officers to intimidate her. She said her business premises, which housed a hair salon and restaurant, were demolished after the agency served her with an evacuation notice. She also claimed officials refused to let her collect her belongings.
In response, Adu Adegoke, LASBCA’s assistant director of public affairs, issued a statement clarifying that the demolished structures were illegal attachments to a building. He noted that Chioma had received multiple notices, including a seal-off and quit notice from the LASBCA.
Gbolaha Oki, General Manager, LASBCA explained that the Chioma Ikokwu and other ccupants had been instructed to remove the illegal extensions but failed to comply.
Oki further stated that LASBCA officials faced harassment and resistance from the property’s occupants while enforcing the law. He accused the viral video of misleading the public and creating sympathy for individuals who violated building and environmental regulations.
“The video circulating online is an attempt to distort facts and mislead the public,” the statement read. “The illegal attachments at 1A Olubunmi Owa Street, Lekki Phase 1, were removed following multiple notices served to the occupants. The owner also carried out an unauthorized demolition without obtaining the required permit, which is a clear violation of Lagos State Building Codes.”
The statement added that LASBCA officials encountered resistance during routine monitoring. The agency stressed its commitment to ensuring safe and sustainable urban development and urged the public to disregard the viral video.
The LASBCA official encouraged support for the government’s efforts to create a cleaner and more organized Lagos despite the video by Chioma Ikokwu.
