John Mahama Sworn In As Ghana’s President

John Mahama was sworn in as Ghana’s president on Tuesday, marking his return to the position he last held eight years ago.

The ceremony, which celebrated his decisive victory in December’s elections, drew the attendance of world leaders and dignitaries.

Mahama, 66, emerged victorious by securing 56.6% of the vote, a significant margin in a nation known for close contests between its two main political parties. His victory reflected widespread dissatisfaction with the incumbent government, particularly over economic challenges aggravated by Ghana’s 2022 sovereign debt default.

Ahead of the inauguration, several Nigerian state governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) visited Mahama to offer their congratulations and discuss strengthening ties between their regions and Ghana. Governors Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State, Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State, Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State, Agbu Kefas of Taraba State, and Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State were among those in attendance.

Governor Oborevwori described the visit as a step toward fostering closer relationships between their states and Ghana. He said, “It was a privilege to pay a courtesy visit to the President-elect of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, earlier today alongside my brother governors. This visit will enhance the bilateral relations between our states and, by extension, strengthen the ties between our beloved country, Nigeria, and our sister nation, Ghana.”

Similarly, Governor Fintiri emphasized the significance of showing support to Mahama as he begins this new phase of leadership. “This visit demonstrates our solidarity with President Mahama as he embarks on a new chapter in Ghana’s governance,” he stated.
