Former Senator representing Rivers East, John Mbata, has been elected the new President-General of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.

Mbata’s emergence followed a consensus election held on Friday at the Ohanaeze General Assembly meeting, convened at the Old Government Lodge in Enugu. The election was attended by prominent leaders, including the Governors of Enugu, Imo, and Anambra States, as well as Senators Chris Ngige, Ben Obi, Victor Umeh, and other distinguished Igbo personalities.

Earlier in the day, reports surfaced that Barrister Uche Okwukwu, also from Rivers State, had been announced as the President-General, but it was later clarified to be a claim from a factional group. The consensus-backed election firmly positions Mbata as the legitimate successor to Nze Ozichukwu Chukwu, who had been appointed to complete the term of the late Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu.

In other executive positions, Prince Okey Nwadinobi from Abia State was elected National Deputy President, and Chief Emeka Sibeidu from Anambra State assumed the role of Secretary General. Chidera Anieke from Enugu State became National Treasurer, Ezechukwu Ezechi from Imo State was named National Publicity Secretary, while Okey Ugwu from Ebonyi State took the position of National Legal Adviser.

Mbata, in his acceptance speech, expressed gratitude to the outgoing leadership for a smooth transition and praised their dedication to Igbo unity. He pledged to lead with integrity and called on governors from the Ohanaeze-member states to provide support and foster collaboration aimed at advancing the organization’s goals.

The newly elected President-General emphasized the importance of unity and collective action, urging stakeholders to prioritize the interest of the Igbo people in national and regional discourse.
