NFF To Officially Unveil Éric Chelle

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is set to introduce Éric Chelle as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles on Monday in what many see as a bold plot to set him up for failure.

The plot according to stakeholders is to excuse the federation from blame over the failure of Nigeria to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

According to a statement from the NFF’s Director of Communications, Ademola Olajire, the event will take place at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja at 11 a.m.

Chelle’s appointment, confirmed last Tuesday by the NFF Executive Committee, was based on a recommendation from the organization’s Technical and Development Committee. At 47 years old, Chelle is stepping into one of the most challenging roles in football.

The NFF President, Ibrahim Gusau, expressed confidence in Eric Chelle’s abilities, emphasizing his potential to succeed. “The Franco-Malian embodies the fresh energy, new thinking, and positive attitude we want the Super Eagles to have as they face the remaining six matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers,” Gusau said.

He acknowledged the passionate reactions from Nigerians following Chelle’s appointment, adding, “We appeal to Nigerians to unite in supporting him. We believe he has what it takes to achieve success with the Super Eagles. The NFF will provide him with all the support needed to excel in this role.”

During the unveiling, the NFF will also reveal the members of Eric Chelle’s coaching team. The crew will initially focus on preparing the Super Eagles B team for next month’s African Nations Championship in East Africa. Afterward, their attention will shift to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, beginning with matches against Rwanda (away) and Zimbabwe (home) in March.

Chelle previously led Mali’s Aiglons to the brink of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals. He left his position at Algerian club MC Oran, a former finalist in the African Champions’ Cup, to take on this new challenge with the Super Eagles.
