Popular Nigerian singer Mr. May D revealed how he missed a golden opportunity to collaborate with American music icon Akon, a chance he shared with Nigerian duo PSquare.

Speaking on the popular ‘Honest Bunch’ podcast hosted by Nedu Wazobia and his team, May D opened up about the experience and its impact on his career.

According to May D, PSquare had no initial plans to sign him but offered their support to help him gain recognition in the music industry, just as they had done for other artists like Jay Martins.

During this period, Akon, who was a fan of May D’s hit song “Chop My Money,” showed interest in collaborating. However, there was one condition: Akon insisted that the music video be shot in America, and he made it clear that he would only participate if May D traveled to the U.S. for the shoot.

May D recalled that while in America, Akon invited him to his office and asked if he had any official deal with PSquare. After May D confirmed he did not, Akon offered him several potential deals, even going as far as offering to pay for May D’s return ticket to America to finalize the opportunities he had lined up.

In a twist of fate, May D chose to share Akon’s offer with PSquare, thinking it would be the right thing to do. Reflecting on the decision, he admitted, “If I had known better, I wouldn’t have disclosed it to them.” His transparency, however, seemed to cost him the opportunity.

The revelation sparked reactions from fans and followers on social media. One user, ‘mariomakez_’, commented, “If we can all admit we will agree that our good heart has made us lose a lot of opportunities. The world we live in now sees good people as not sharp and takes advantage of them.” Another user, ‘_cherii_coco’, advised, “And when you finally meet your helper, make sure you learn how to keep your mouth shut.”

Other reactions reflected a mix of understanding and frustration. ‘Neovoh’ remarked, “I believe him, brothers wey dey fight themselves for money, who be outsider wey dem no go wreck,” while ‘seyiburner’ reflected on the nature of people’s motivations, saying, “Some people don’t deserve honesty. They want you to remain their beneficiary. They don’t want you to be greater than them. Dem no want make you blow pass them.”

The story serves as a reminder of how moments of honesty can sometimes lead to missed opportunities, while others who may act less transparently continue to thrive.
