Ibadan FM Boss Oriyomi Hamzat Marks Bail With Somber Tribute To Victims
By Benjamin Abioye
The chairman and managing director of Agidigbo FM in Ibadan, Oriyomi Hamzat, has chosen to mark his recent bail in a deeply emotional manner. Instead of celebrating with grandeur, he decided to pay his respects to the children who tragically lost their lives at the Christmas funfair in Ibadan on December 18, 2024.
The fair, which was meant to bring joy to children, became the site of an unfortunate incident that resulted in the loss of over 35 young lives.
In a somber tribute, Hamzat visited the Islamic High School in Bashorun, Ibadan, where the incident occurred. Accompanied by a large crowd of supporters, he observed a moment of silence in honor of the victims. After leaving the Islamic High School, Hamzat went straight to Agidigbo FM, where a large crowd of his fans had gathered, eagerly waiting for him to arrive and address them. The crowd’s support was palpable, as many people had also called in to the station, offering congratulations and expressing joy over his bail. The moment was covered by his press team and broadcast live on Agidigbo FM.
As expected, Hamzat mounted the stage to speak to the crowd but was overcome with emotion. He could not speak, as he was crying deeply, unable to continue at the time of filing this report.
GWG.ng reports that on Monday, January 13, 2025, an Oyo State High Court sitting in Ibadan granted bail to three key individuals involved in the tragic incident. These individuals included the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, Queen Shilekunola Naomi, the proprietor of Agidigbo FM, Oriyomi Hamzat, and the principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun Ibadan, Mr. Abdullahi Fasasi. The ruling was made by Justice K. B. Olawoyin in Court 8, Ring Road, Ibadan.
The three individuals face charges that include conspiracy, negligence causing harm, and failure to provide proper security and medical care, all linked to the disaster at the Christmas funfair. The incident left 35 children dead after a stampede during the event on December 18, 2024. Following a bail application filed by their legal counsel, the court granted bail to the defendants after considering the arguments presented.
The court outlined five key conditions for the bail. These included a N10 million bond, two sureties with property documents within the court’s jurisdiction, the surrendering of their international passports, and a restriction on granting interviews while the case is ongoing.
The ruling came after a delay, with the court initially setting the date for January 7, 2025, but the decision was ultimately made on January 13. The community remains in shock over the tragedy, and the ongoing legal proceedings are expected to keep the incident in the public eye for the coming months.
