Nigerian singer Akinmayokun Awodumila, popularly known as May D, has claimed that he was once more prominent than music superstars Wizkid and Davido.

Speaking on an episode of ‘The Honest Bunch’ podcast, May D reminisced about the early days of his career and the dominance he once held in the Nigerian music scene.

“Back then, it was Wizkid, Davido, and me,” he said. “I was even bigger. Wetin be ‘Holla at Your Boy’ compared to ‘Soundtrack?’” May D referred to his hit single “Soundtrack,” which gained massive popularity when he was signed to Square Records in 2011.

However, his time with the label was short-lived. In August 2012, it was officially announced that May D had parted ways with Square Records.

In a related development, Nigerian artiste Blackface reiterated his claims that several colleagues have used his work without proper acknowledgment. Addressing the issue during an interview with TVC, Blackface dismissed suggestions that his accusations were baseless.

“People jack my vibes. They love them. It’s not their fault. If I was not me, I would be jacking me too,” he stated. Blackface explained that his songs are registered and protected as intellectual property, making it unacceptable for others to use them without giving him credit.

“All my songs are being jacked because when you release a song, it becomes a published work. The songs are all registered. There’s no song that’s released that’s not registered. Once it is in the public domain, it’s a published work. Was it published before your work?” he asked rhetorically.

Both May D and Blackface’s remarks highlight ongoing conversations in the Nigerian music industry about credit, recognition, and the value of intellectual property.
