The Nigeria Police Force’s Zone 12 Command announced on Monday that the officer involved in the shooting of the former Chairman of Ningi Local Government Area, Bauchi State, has been taken into custody.
Thomas Goni, the Police Public Relations Officer for Zone 12, confirmed the incident and reassured the public that a fair and thorough investigation would be conducted. He emphasized that the officer responsible had been identified and would face the appropriate disciplinary actions according to the Force’s regulations.
“We understand the concern and tension this incident has caused within the community. We assure the public that we are addressing it with the utmost seriousness,” Goni stated. He also mentioned that the police would reassess its training and protocols to better equip officers with the skills necessary to handle situations respectfully and calmly.
The former chairman, Alhaji Danlami Alhassan, recounted the incident, which occurred on Sunday night around 9:30 pm at the Wunti Market area of Bauchi. Alhassan explained that the officer’s identity became known after his bag fell from his motorcycle, revealing his police ID card, teargas canisters, and other police equipment.
“I was injured and taken to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital in Bauchi, where I received treatment and was later discharged,” Alhassan said. He added that he was simply on his way to buy suya (roasted meat) when the incident took place.
