Lawmaker suicide attempt Obasa leadership

Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have briefed the Governance Advisory Committee (GAC) about the recent leadership change in the House with one lawmaker revealing his thoughts of suicide under the former leadership.

The meeting, held at Lagos House in Marina, was attended by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, lawmakers, and Lagos APC leaders.

During the meeting, several lawmakers shared their experiences under the leadership of the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, who was impeached on Monday.

One lawmaker revealed a particularly distressing account of how he almost committed suicide due to Obasa’s alleged mistreatment. “For daring to contest the seat of Speaker against Obasa after the election, I nearly committed suicide due to the way I was treated,” the lawmaker disclosed.

He went on to explain how he was ostracized, with none of his colleagues in the House communicating or even acknowledging him. “Nobody dared to greet me nor respond to my greeting,” he said, adding that he would have left the House if not for the people he represented.

After the briefing, the GAC formally endorsed the change in leadership. Mojisola Meranda, the newly elected Speaker and former Deputy Speaker, addressed the press, confirming the endorsement. “We specifically sought the blessings of the GAC and our fellow lawmakers. We are united in moving the Assembly forward and ensuring the progress of Lagos State,” Meranda stated, accompanied by her colleagues.

The Conference 57 of Local Government and Local Council Development Area Chairmen also congratulated Meranda on her historic election as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

In a statement signed by Chairman Alabi Kolade David and Public Relations Officer Olusesan Daini, the council chairmen praised Meranda’s dedication, competence, and service commitment. They also expressed their full support for her leadership and pledged to work together to ensure a successful tenure.
