Tinubu Govt Sad Over Kemi Badenoch’s Attacks On Nigeria
By Benjamin Abioye

The Nigerian government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has called on Kemi Badenoch, the leader of the UK’s Conservative Party, to refrain from criticizing Nigeria. Badenoch, a Nigerian-born politician, has made headlines recently for her harsh remarks about the country of her birth.
In a speech delivered at an event organized by Onward, a British think tank, Badenoch emphasized her concerns about Britain’s future. She stated that she does not want the UK to become like Nigeria, describing its government as one that “destroys lives.” She used this rhetoric while discussing the need for political reforms in the UK, warning that without changes, Britain could face a similar fate to Nigeria’s troubled governance.
The remarks drew a swift response from Nigeria. Daniel Bwala, President Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Policy Communications, took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his disapproval. He urged Badenoch to stop using Nigeria’s challenges as a tool to appeal to her far-right political supporters.
Bwala wrote, “I truly wish that sister Kemi Badenoch would avoid denigrating Nigeria, the country of her origin, as a weapon to please her far-right base.” He also pointed out that other leaders, like British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, have not used their countries’ past issues as political leverage. “Rishi Sunak never weaponized the gang rape and other vices in India, the country of his origin, just so he would impress the far-right base,” Bwala noted.
While acknowledging Badenoch’s intelligence and political success, Bwala expressed regret over her negative remarks, saying, “She is smart, intelligent, and we are proud of her rise in UK politics, but we are equally saddened by her terrible rhetoric against Nigeria.”
