UI Students Protest power outage at UCH

Students from the University of Ibadan (UI) on Wednesday protested against the ongoing 82-day power outage at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan.

UCH, which serves as the teaching hospital for medical students at UI, has been without electricity for months.

The power outage is reportedly due to unpaid bills owed to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC). The power supply was cut off in March 2024 after UCH failed to settle its electricity debt. Prior to that, the hospital had also faced a disconnection in November 2023 for similar reasons. Despite this, the power has yet to be restored.

On Wednesday morning, UI students gathered for a peaceful protest to express their frustration over the situation. The President of the Students’ Union, Bolaji Aweda, led the protest. During the demonstration, Aweda addressed reporters, stating that the ongoing power outage has severely affected the students, especially those studying medicine at UCH.

Aweda explained, “We are protesting against what is happening. And, of course, our students are affected. For 82 days, there has been no light at UCH, and this is due to the inability of UCH to pay its electricity bill to IBEDC.” He further revealed that IBEDC had demanded that UCH settle its debt before power could be restored.
