Femi Falana Rejects Sowore’s Bail Conditions (Video)
By Gideon Ayeni

Renowned Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has responded to the bail conditions set for Nigerian activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore.
The bail conditions, which included Sowore depositing his international passport and providing a level 16 civil servant as a guarantor, have raised concerns in legal circles.
Sowore, who shared the details on his official X handle on Monday, explained that the Nigerian Police initially required him to provide a level 17 civil servant as a guarantor for his bail. However, after he declined this request, the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) reassessed the terms and reduced the required guarantor rank to level 16.
In his post, Sowore said: “The Nigeria Police Force has requested that I deposit my international passport and provide a level 17 civil servant as a guarantor for bail, but I have declined these conditions and opted to remain in police custody.”
Falana, reacting to the situation, expressed his opposition to the practice of involving civil servants in the bail process for individuals accused of criminal offenses. The legal luminary emphasized that it was neither common practice nor appropriate to require civil servants to assume such responsibility.

According to Falana: “Expecting a Level 16 civil servant to own property worth N100,000,000 runs counter to the Public Service Rules and, by extension, the fight against corruption. I will take legal action to ensure that the involvement of civil servants below the rank of Level 16 officers in bail arrangements, whether in state or federal public services or their agencies, be eliminated.”
