The All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially expelled former Minister of Interior and ex-governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola, over allegations of anti-party activities.

Aregbesola, who governed Osun for eight years, was accused of working against the party’s interests by forming a faction known as The Osun Progressives (TOP), which later rebranded as the Omoluabi Caucus. The group was widely blamed for contributing to the APC’s defeat in the 2022 Osun governorship election.

In a decisive move on Sunday, the Omoluabi Caucus, under Aregbesola’s leadership, announced its exit from the APC, citing the party’s dwindling popularity in the state. However, the APC leadership had already taken steps to remove him, issuing a formal expulsion letter.

The letter, titled “Allegations of Anti-Party Activities – Conveyance of State Exco Decision to You” and obtained by The Nation, outlined the findings of a disciplinary investigation. The State Executive Committee (SEC), after reviewing the committee’s report, upheld Aregbesola’s expulsion, citing “clear evidence” of his actions undermining the party’s unity.

“With the approval of your expulsion, you cease to be a member of APC,” the letter stated. “Consequently, you are not to hold yourself out as a member or act in any capacity on behalf of the Party in any manner whatsoever.”

Despite the expulsion, the APC acknowledged Aregbesola’s past contributions to the party but urged him to respect the decision and refrain from further involvement in party affairs.

The development marks a significant shake-up in Osun APC politics, as the former governor, once a key figure in the party, now finds himself on the outside amid ongoing internal rifts.
