Activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has denied the cybercrime charges filed against him by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun.

The cybercrime case against Sowore is being heard at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The charges stem from a post on Sowore’s verified X (formerly Twitter) account, where he referred to Egbetokun as an “illegal IGP.” The police claim that his statement was false and aimed at provoking unrest and undermining the authority of the police force.

The case, registered as FCH/ABJ/23/25, accuses Sowore of deliberately using social media to spread false information with the intention of disturbing public peace.

When he appeared before Justice Abdullah Liman at the Federal High Court on Wednesday around 10:00 am, Sowore pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Outside the courtroom, a group of his supporters staged a protest against his arraignment, condemning the police’s actions. One of the protesters criticized the authorities, saying:

“Police officers are here to intimidate protesters. Meanwhile, Abuja is burning. Look at them gathered here instead of being deployed to crime hotspots.”

He further added:
“This shows the seriousness of this government and the illegal Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun. If he were serious, he would send his men to tackle crime, not to harass peaceful demonstrators.”

The cybercrime case continues as Sowore and his legal team prepare to defend themselves against the allegations.
