By Benjamin Abioye

Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has been elected as the new chairman of the Lake Chad Basin Governors Forum.
His election was confirmed during the forum’s 5th meeting, where he was entrusted with leading the group for a two-year tenure. The forum serves as a platform for regional leaders to collaborate on critical issues affecting the Lake Chad Basin, such as security, climate change, and economic development.
In his acceptance speech, Governor Buni expressed deep gratitude to his fellow governors and delegates for the trust placed in him. He assured them of his commitment to serving with responsibility and dedication. “It is gratifying that as we celebrate the successful end of this meeting, my colleagues have found me worthy of chairing the forum for the next two years,” Buni stated. “I shall liaise and work closely with you and all development partners to ensure the success of the forum and the general development of the region.”
Buni also took a moment to recognize the contributions of the outgoing chairperson, Governor Ildjima Abdraman of Hadjer Lamis Province, Chad. He commended her leadership and commitment to the forum’s objectives. “I especially thank the outgoing chairperson of this forum, Her Excellency Ildjima Abdraman, for her leadership,” he said.
During his speech, Buni emphasized the importance of strengthening cross-border cooperation, enhancing security, and promoting sustainable development. He also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his commitment to peace and progress in the Lake Chad Basin. “I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his leadership and commitment to peace, security, and development of the Lake Chad Basin region,” he stated.
Buni further urged his colleagues to ensure that the resolutions from the meeting are put into action. “It is my hope that we will internalize, domesticate, and act on the lessons and resolutions of this meeting,” he said. “We must move from discussions to action-packed implementation that carries everyone along for the growth and development of the region.”
The forum concluded with a call for stronger partnerships, increased resource mobilization, and a shared commitment to improving the livelihoods of people in the Lake Chad region. Buni assured members of his dedication to driving meaningful progress and ensuring that the forum’s goals are achieved. “We look forward to a more robust partnership, support, and the needed resources to actualize our shared ambition of building a better and prosperous region,” he added.
