ICC Official Nigeria’s U-19 Cricket Team’s Performance

The Head of Global Development for the International Cricket Council (ICC), William Gelenwright, has praised Nigeria’s female Under-19 cricket team, the Junior Female Yellow Greens, for their outstanding performance at the 2025 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Malaysia.

The young Nigerian team, set to return home today, January 31, finished in sixth place, securing automatic qualification for the next edition of the tournament. Their campaign ended on a high note with a thrilling six-run victory over Ireland in their second Super 6 match. This marked their second win in three matches, having previously secured an impressive two-run victory against New Zealand. Their only loss came against South Africa during the group stage.

Advancing from the group stage as the second-best team, the Junior Female Yellow Greens finished third in the Super 6, just one point behind England, who claimed the last semi-final spot. Despite falling short of the semi-finals, they became the first West African team to participate in the tournament, boosting Nigeria’s reputation in international cricket.

Throughout the competition, the team displayed determination and skill, overcoming challenges such as two rain-affected matches against Samoa and England. Their strong performance has now guaranteed them a place in the next tournament, set to take place in Nepal and Bangladesh in 2027.

Gelenwright was full of praise for the Nigerian team, saying, “A stunning performance by Nigeria. This tournament could very well be a turning point for Cricket Nigeria and the establishment of a new powerhouse in African cricket.”

As the tournament nears its conclusion, today’s semi-finals will see South Africa take on Australia, while defending champions India will face England in a highly anticipated clash.
