KASU ASUU Declares Indefinite Strike
By Benjamin Abioye

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Kaduna State University (KASU) has announced an indefinite strike starting February 11, 2025.
The decision came after repeated attempts to resolve salary and welfare disputes with the state government failed.
In a letter signed by ASUU KASU Chairman, Peter Adamu, and Secretary, Peter Waziri, the union stated that it had sought approval from its national body before proceeding with the strike. The document explained that the Kaduna State Government had failed to address several key concerns raised by the lecturers.
Among the grievances is the non-payment of five months’ salaries from May to September 2022, as well as 60 percent of September 2017 salaries. The union also mentioned that other withheld wages remain unpaid.
Additionally, ASUU pointed out that Earned Academic Allowance from 2015 to 2020 has not been settled. Funds for the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme, covering 2016 to 2023, have also not been disbursed.
Further concerns include unpaid pensions from 2009 to 2019, outstanding promotion arrears from 2019 to 2023, and the lack of Group Life Insurance payments for staff members who passed away since 2020.
The union recalled a meeting with Governor Uba Sani on August 17, 2024, where he assured them that their entitlements would be paid. Despite a follow-up letter sent on August 20, 2024, and additional appeals in October and December, there was no progress.
Another meeting took place on December 17, 2024, during which the governor promised that payment arrangements would begin within three weeks. However, this commitment was not fulfilled.
On January 17, 2025, ASUU reminded the governor of his promise and urged swift action to prevent industrial action. With no response from the government, the union has now resolved to go on strike.
ASUU has made it clear that the strike will remain in place until all outstanding payments and welfare issues are addressed.
