Kwankwaso Absent As NNPP Elects New Leadership
By Benjamin Abioye

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has appointed Agbo Major as its new National Chairman following the party’s elective National Convention held in Lagos on Tuesday night.
Delegates and party officials from various levels attended the event, where several other key positions were also filled. However, conspicuously absent were the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso and his supporters.
Among the newly elected officials are Mr. Oginni Olaposi as National Secretary, Chief Felix Chukwurah as Deputy National Chairman (South), Mr. Adetoyese Omokanye as National Treasurer, Alhaji Babayo Muhammed as Deputy National Chairman (North), and Abdulrasaq Abdulsallam as National Publicity Secretary. Others include Hajia Aisha Kade as National Woman Leader, Chief Edward Ofomona as National Youth Leader, and Omolara Johnson as National Organizing Secretary.
The convention was attended by members of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT), the National Working Committee (NWC), and elected representatives from across the country. This development follows a court ruling on November 1, 2024, which directed the NNPP BoT, led by founder and chairman Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, to reorganize party structures from the ward level to the national leadership. The court also instructed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize and work with the new NNPP leadership.
Speaking at the convention, Dr. Aniebonam confirmed that the party had successfully restructured its leadership at all levels. He stated, “Today, the board shall conclude its assignment through the national convention to elect and establish its National Working Committee to take charge of the party’s administration and management. INEC and other security agencies were duly notified in the process.”
BoT Secretary Alhaji Mohammed Babayo reaffirmed the party’s commitment to unity and effective governance, dismissing any rumors of internal divisions. He urged the new leadership to work with dedication and integrity. “The task ahead is huge, but with unity, hard work, and a clear vision, we will continue to strengthen the NNPP and position it as a true vehicle for change in Nigeria,” he said.
In his acceptance speech, Agbo Major, the newly elected National Chairman, called on all party members, including those who may have felt sidelined, to come together and support the party’s growth. “I thank all delegates present here today for this huge confidence reposed in me. I won’t take this trust for granted. The NWC under me, as elected today, is poised to deliver. We are committed to repositioning our party for 2027, and this we will do vigorously,” he assured.
He also emphasized the importance of accountability and high standards among party officials. “We will not tolerate anything short of the expected standards and benchmarks drawn to keep you on your toes. The National Secretary will issue directives to this effect soon,” he added.
