The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly criticized the dismissal of 900 employees by the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KEDC), calling it both illegal and unjust.

The NLC has demanded the immediate reinstatement of all affected workers and warned that if the company does not comply, it will face larger protests. The NLC argues that there was no valid reason for the mass dismissal.

In a statement issued on Thursday by Benson Upah, the NLC’s Head of Information and Public Affairs, the organization called the sack a violation of due process and redundancy rules. The NLC also urged its affiliates in Kaduna State to join the ongoing protests in support of the dismissed workers. The statement, titled “Come Off Your High Horse,” condemned KEDC’s actions and expressed full support for the workers.

The NLC praised the workers for their peaceful strike, despite provocation from KEDC’s management. The congress referred to the protests as a “heroic struggle against illegality and injustice” and urged the company to reconsider its decision. The NLC emphasized that reinstating the fired workers would promote industrial harmony and restore vital services. It also warned that if the company did not act, stronger measures would follow.

In response, KEDC denied the claims about the termination of 900 workers, calling the issue part of a staff restructuring process. Abdullahi Abdulazeez, the Head of Corporate Affairs for Kaduna Electric, stated that the company was undergoing a transformation to ensure its long-term success. He explained that the notifications about “services no longer required” were directed only at employees of the Independent System Operator (ISO), a division of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), not 900 workers as alleged.
