2-Year-Marriage Ends As Wife Rejects Husband’s Surname
By Gideon Ayeni

A two-year-old marriage has reportedly ended in divorce after a prolonged dispute over the wife’s refusal to adopt her husband’s surname.
The revelation was made by Facebook user Iyke Orji, who shared details of the split, expressing disappointment that what he considered a minor issue led to the dissolution of the union.
In the news that is astounding many in Nigeria, Orji said that his friend—who was the husband—had requested his wife to update her social media handles, bank details, and official documents to reflect his surname after their marriage. However, the wife allegedly declined, citing concerns about her online following, professional identity, and other personal engagements tied to her maiden name.
Despite ongoing discussions for two years, the couple reportedly failed to reach a compromise, ultimately leading to their divorce, which was finalized just four days before Orji’s post.
Sharing his frustration, Orji wrote:
“One of my friends just divorced his wife four days ago after two years of marriage. The issue? Something very minor that could have been resolved with maturity and loyalty. He asked her to change her surname on all platforms, including her bank details, but she refused, saying it would ruin her followers, identity, and career. After two years of arguments, she chose divorce over a name change. Welcome back to singlehood, brother.”
The story has since sparked debates online, with opinions divided across news and social media platforms across Nigeria as to whether a surname change should be a dealbreaker in marriage.
