Controversy Trails Reports Of Lagos Speaker’s Resignation

Controversy was on Wednesday shadowing the fate of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, following unconfirmed news reports in Nigeria that she had resigned her position.
The news report that Speaker Mojisola Meranda resigned her position just after 38 days has excited some sections of the Nigerian political class was given a measure of credibility by one of Nigeria’s leading newspapers, Business Day which broke the story.
The news report was upon claims according to many insiders that she had actually penned down a resignation letter but was dissuaded by her colleagues in the House who stopped her from reading out the letter when the House convened on Monday. Instead, she was affirmed with a vote of confidence.
Those pressing for her resignation were on Wednesday afternoon positive in their claims that Meranda would sooner than later step down from the office of Speaker.
However, whether the immediate past speaker, Mudashiru Obasa would take over is another thing if and when she resigns.
The Lagos Assembly has been in turmoil since the ouster of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, with internal tensions continuing to shape the legislative landscape.
Details surrounding Meranda’s fate remain unclear, and the claim that she has resigned has sent news and social media platforms in Nigeria abuzz.
Some sources alleged that the Obasa camp was spreading a fake resignation letter to deceive the public.
GWG.ng had earlier reported that the speaker had resigned a claim that is, however, yet to be confirmed.
