The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, to stop labeling them as the aggressors in the ongoing political crisis in the state.

This follows claims by Osun APC that attacks by hoodlums linked to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have led to the deaths of ten people.

Governor Makinde visited Osun State on Sunday to witness the swearing-in ceremony of newly elected local government chairmen and their deputies. During the event, he advised APC members in the state to avoid political violence and prevent Osun from becoming a “Wild Wild West.” He also encouraged them to seek legal means to resolve disputes instead of taking matters into their own hands.

Osun Governor Ademola Adeleke also spoke at the event, instructing the newly sworn-in council officials to stay away from the council secretariats to prevent clashes.

However, the Osun APC rejected Makinde’s comments in a statement signed by its Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi. The party claimed that Makinde was only trying to please Governor Adeleke because they belong to the same political party.

The statement read: “If we may ask, where was Governor Makinde when his political soulmate in the erstwhile State of the Virtuous used the sanctity of the Osun State Government House to incite members of his party to go all out and attack our members and chieftains?

“Where was Governor Makinde when the political hoodlums of his party shot and killed the newly reinstated chairman of our party in Ikire, Hon. Remi Abass, Irewole Local Government Council Area, apparently emboldened by the earlier incitement of Governor Adeleke?

“Where was Governor Makinde when thugs loyal to the PDP killed one person in Irojo, Ilesa, Osun State, during the illegal and shambolic local government council election purportedly held by his brother on Saturday?”

The party also questioned why Makinde remained silent when PDP-linked thugs allegedly attacked APC chieftains, Remi Omowaiye and Tobi Famurewa, in Ilesa.

“We want to make it clear to Governor Makinde that he is not in a position to lecture the leadership of the APC on how to manage the ongoing efforts of our duly elected chairmen and councillors to reap the benefits of the Court of Appeal judgement, Akure Division, delivered on 10 February 2025.

“Where was Governor Makinde when the embattled Governor Adeleke ignored the advice of the nation’s chief law officer, the Attorney-General of the Federation, to cancel the so-called election—an election he claimed to have reviewed and analysed in light of the Court of Appeal judgement, which did not warrant any new election in Osun State until the tenure of the reinstated APC council chairmen and councillors had ended?

“Why did Governor Makinde remain silent when his Osun State counterpart hurled insults at the state Commissioner of Police, the State Director of the DSS, and the State Comptroller of the Civil Defence, despite their efforts to maintain peace in the state?”

The Osun APC further accused Governor Adeleke of defying a warning from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who had earlier advised against conducting the local government elections due to security concerns.
