Military Plane Crash Khartoum

A tragic plane crash in Sudan claimed the lives of 19 people when a military transport aircraft went down in a residential area near Khartoum.

The military plane crash occurred on Tuesday night near Wadi Seidna Air Base, a key military site in Omdurman, northwest of the capital of Sudan.

According to the Sudanese army, the Antonov aircraft crashed during takeoff, resulting in deaths among both military personnel and civilians. Witnesses in the area reported hearing a loud explosion, followed by damage to nearby homes and power outages.

The health ministry confirmed the rising death toll, stating, “Search efforts are still ongoing to find the remaining martyrs under the rubble.” Emergency teams quickly transported injured civilians, including children, to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

A military source, speaking anonymously, suggested that the crash was caused by a technical malfunction, though no further details were provided.

The crash came just a day after the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) claimed responsibility for shooting down a Russian-made Ilyushin aircraft over Nyala, South Darfur. The RSF stated that they had destroyed the plane along with its crew.

The military plane crash marks a further escalation in Sudan’s ongoing conflict, which began in April 2023 between Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.

Once allies, the two military leaders are now bitter enemies, dragging Sudan into a devastating war. The conflict has led to tens of thousands of deaths, widespread destruction of major cities, and one of the worst humanitarian crises in recent history, according to the United Nations. Despite the army gaining ground in parts of central Sudan and Khartoum, the war continues with no resolution in sight, leaving millions in desperate conditions.
