Senate Must Investigate Natasha’s Petition – Ezekwesili
By Benjamin Abioye

Former Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili, has called for an independent investigation into the sexual harassment allegation made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Godswill Akpabio.
Ezekwesili criticized the Senate’s Ethics and Privileges Committee for dismissing the Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan petition and insisted that such a serious accusation should not be ignored.
In an open letter to the Senate, Ezekwesili reminded lawmakers that the National Assembly belongs to the Nigerian people, not politicians. She stated, “The petition of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan must be independently investigated and openly discussed in a public hearing that the accused does not preside.”
She urged the Senate to “swiftly appoint an independent investigator on the petition of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan” and elevate the Ethics and Privileges Committee’s proceedings to a public hearing for full transparency.
Ezekwesili described the committee’s handling of the petition as a failure of democracy. She stressed, “Whenever a situation as the one involving Senators Natasha Akpoti and Senator Godswill Akpabio occurs, the lawmakers must understand the Nigerian public want transparency and full disclosure.”
Condemning the Senate’s decision to dismiss the petition, she called it “a democratic aberration” and insisted that it could not be accepted. She added, “What happened yesterday in the Senate Chamber, where a Senate President presided over a grave matter involving him, was farcical and a blot on our democracy.”
Ezekwesili emphasized the importance of treating the petition with urgency and seriousness to protect the integrity of the Senate. “It is in our public interest that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s petition be urgently given the seriousness it deserves to defend the institutional integrity of our Senate,” she concluded.
