Remi Tinubu’s Position On Senate Sex Harassment Saga Stirs Controversy
By Benjamin Abioye

Nigeria’s First Lady, Remi Tinubu, has come under fire following her remarks on the ongoing sexual harassment allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
The controversy on began when Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Akpabio of inappropriate behavior, sparking public debate and outrage.
Speaking ahead of International Women’s Day, Mrs. Tinubu defended the Senate, stating that it remains a mature institution capable of handling issues internally. She dismissed concerns about the way the allegations were being addressed, saying, “I know with what is going on in the Senate, people may wonder why I’m not taking an opposing stance. But I believe the Senate is handling matters as it should. It is an esteemed and mature institution that should not be dragged into controversy.”
She also advised women to be firm in leadership positions, stating, “Women must uplift themselves and ensure they are not spoken to inappropriately. You can always shut down such behavior before it even begins.”
Her comments did not sit well with many Nigerians, who perceived them as dismissive of sexual harassment concerns. Social media users expressed their disappointment, with many accusing her of prioritizing political interests over justice.
One user, @MezieAbia, wrote, “The wife of the Nigerian president has murdered sleep by supporting the evil done against Senator Natasha. Senator Remi Tinubu is obviously backing the wrong horse for political reasons.”
Another user, @TohLuh, stated, “Going by this, the Nigerian First Lady supports sexual harassment. There’s no two ways to see it.”
@Johnson criticized her stance, saying, “I knew she would never support Natasha but rather pitch her tent with the Senate President. It’s so sad that some people are so unfair in handling things they were once victims of when they get to higher positions of power.”
Many also pointed out the irony of her position, referencing past incidents where she herself had been the subject of inappropriate remarks. @Irunnia_ recalled, “Is this not the same woman Dino threatened to r@pe?”
Others viewed her remarks as an attempt to downplay the issue. @FlyingScholar wrote, “She obviously doesn’t think sexual harassment should be taken seriously or even as an offense! Shame! Wow!”
There were also those who questioned her loyalty to women’s rights. @Milan stated, “Do you know what she has just stated? As a woman in the house, you don’t have the right to speak out in case such an incident occurs. Women supporting women, indeed.”
However, not everyone condemned her. A few individuals tried to justify her stance, suggesting she was only acting within her political role. @dame-lorla commented, “I may not like her or her stance, but I understand her. Now she has to support her husband, so what else is anybody expecting her to say?”
Despite these differing opinions, the backlash highlights the deep frustrations Nigerians feel about how issues of sexual harassment and gender equality are handled in the country. Many believe that rather than dismissing allegations, the Senate should take them seriously and ensure a fair investigation.
As the controversy continues, it remains to be seen whether Mrs. Tinubu or the Senate leadership will respond further to the criticisms.
