A former governor of Bayelsa State, Seriake Dickson, led a group of senators from opposition parties to visit suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan at her residence on Friday.

Natasha was suspended for six months following a disagreement with the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio. The dispute involved her rejection of a new seat in the Senate and allegations of sexual harassment.

Dickson, who is a member of the Senate’s Ethics and Privileges Committee—the body that recommended her suspension—shared a photo of the visit on his social media pages. He explained that he was occupied with tax reform bills and was not present in the Senate when the decision was made.

He emphasized that senators experience both highs and lows in their careers, and it is customary for them to support one another in difficult times. He also expressed confidence that the Senate leadership would resolve the matter soon.

Dickson stated, “The public may recall that, for the past three days, I was attending a workshop on the Tax Reform Bills, which started on Wednesday, March 5, and ended on Friday, March 7. That is why I was not available when the committee handled Senator Natasha’s suspension.”

He further clarified that he was under the impression that the hearing on her case would take place on Wednesday, March 11, as scheduled. “I was assured by the Committee Chairman that the hearing would hold on March 11, and notices had already been sent out. I was not informed about the emergency meeting that took place yesterday.”

After concluding his work on the tax reform bills, Dickson and some opposition senators decided to visit Natasha at her home, where they met with her and her husband.

“We offered words of encouragement, prayers, and advice for a quick resolution of the issues surrounding her suspension,” he said.

He also mentioned that after listening to Natasha and her husband, he would discuss with his colleagues to find ways to engage with Senate leadership and work towards resolving the issue as soon as possible.
