EKSU Lecturer

A viral video of a lecturer at Ekiti State University (EKSU) calling a student’s family to report her lack of seriousness in class has sparked mixed reactions online.

In the video, the female lecturer was seen making a call to the student’s sister before requesting to speak directly with the father. She expressed concerns about the student’s academic performance, stating that she was “wasting space” and needed to be “dragged” from the front of the class to the entrance to avoid distractions.

This unusual incident has led to a heated debate, with people sharing diverse opinions. Some argue that the lecturer acted appropriately by holding the student accountable, while others believe she overstepped her boundaries.

One social media user, @SANTORINI, supported the lecturer’s action, saying, “Some students think university is a social club until reality hits. That lecturer did the right thing by informing the girl’s parents.” Another user, @Sulucious, also defended the lecturer, stating, “She did the right thing because if she had taken matters into her own hands, people would have called for her arrest. Reporting to the family was the best approach.”

On the other hand, critics see the lecturer’s actions as inappropriate. @flowzki commented, “Schooling in this country is becoming ridiculous. This is a university, not a secondary school. None of this makes sense.” Another user, @FlexxRichie, said, “There’s no way I would give any lecturer my parent’s number. You can’t force it out of me.”

Some people found humor in the situation. @Manman_3166 joked, “How will she explain this to her family? After that call, a family meeting is definitely happening!” Meanwhile, @Abbietrends simply wrote, “LOL, this is funny.”

The debate also touched on broader issues regarding discipline in Nigerian universities. @DavidFalade001 suggested, “Maybe we need this system in every tertiary institution. Many students fail because their parents don’t monitor them.”

Some believe the lecturer’s actions were a necessary intervention. @Edidem_of_Uyo wrote, “Enough of students wasting their family’s money without taking school seriously. This was the right move.” Similarly, @Fakayode_Habeeb stated, “That’s good. I support the idea of lecturers checking in on students like this.”

Others see it as an invasion of privacy. @chababy81 said, “This is why some students don’t respect their lecturers. They do too much. Can you imagine?” Another user, @NikkiMary278018, added, “A lecturer calling a student’s family? That’s definitely crossing a line.”

Some took a neutral stance, pointing out the mixed outcomes of such actions. @EMZO_001 noted, “All these efforts, and the girl might still not change.” @Do_Good commented, “The issue isn’t about calling her parents, it’s about doing it publicly. That’s where the problem is.”

Others highlighted how different students would react. @Lumberchase joked, “Lol, they asked for your mother’s number, and you actually gave it to them?” Meanwhile, @Micro_Jewel25 wrote, “Trust me, her parents will believe everything instantly!”

While opinions remain divided, the incident has raised questions about the role of lecturers in students’ personal lives and whether such an approach is necessary or excessive.
