Former Kaduna Central senator, Shehu Sani, has explained that his failure to secure re-election in 2019 was due to his opposition to a $340 million loan proposed by former Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Sunday, Sani revealed that his stance against the loan led El-Rufai to see him as an enemy, which triggered political retaliation.

“El-Rufai sought a $340 million loan, and we said ‘No’ because we believed it would have severe consequences for the people. He saw us as political enemies and fought back,” Sani said.

He explained that this political battle caused many politicians to leave the party. When he chose to resist, it eventually cost him his seat in the Senate.

“This battle affected several other politicians, forcing many of us to leave the party en masse. In my case, I stood up to the governor and paid the price by losing my seat,” he added.

Sani further pointed out that the current Kaduna State governor had recently admitted that the loan had harmed the state’s finances, confirming his earlier warnings.

“At the time, El-Rufai, the state Assembly members, and many political figures opposed me. But today, even the current governor has publicly admitted that the state’s finances have been crippled by that loan.

“Many projects remain abandoned, and Kaduna is now the second most indebted state in Nigeria. This proves I was right, even though I lost my seat,” he stated.

Despite the political cost, Sani expressed satisfaction in standing by his principles. He emphasized that being proven right about the loan’s impact mattered more to him than winning another term in office.

“I’m content knowing that when I die, no one will point at my grave and say, ‘This is the man who approved a loan our children will repay for 100 years.’ That vindication means more to me than returning to the Senate,” he said.
