Reno Omokri El-Rufai

Nigerians have once again turned a spotlight on political hypocrisy as Reno Omokri’s latest jab at former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has stirred up heated debates.

Omokri, known for his outspoken political takes, shared a news excerpt where El-Rufai once vowed to remain in the All Progressives Congress (APC) for life. His caption read, “Believe El-Rufai and you will believe anything!” —a clear dig at El-Rufai’s recent defection to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

But instead of rallying behind Omokri’s criticism, many Nigerians turned the tables, accusing him of being no different from the man he was calling out. Nigerian social and mainstream news media quickly became a battleground of receipts, with users dredging up Omokri’s past statements and questioning his own political integrity.

One user, @Akinscoat, pointed out the irony of Omokri’s attack, saying, “You’ve said worse than that in the past! Look at kettle calling pot black!” Similarly, @Okechukwu987 mocked Omokri’s history of shifting political stances, writing, “Bros, you don’t have any moral standing to tweet this. The same you that organized ‘Harass Them in London’ is now singing a new song. Just let El-Rufai do his thing.”

The backlash didn’t stop there. Some argued that all Nigerian politicians prioritize self-interest, with @YakubTijani2 remarking, “Nigerian politicians don’t joke with their personal interests.” Others flat-out dismissed Omokri’s credibility. @Patrick_Idia reminded him, “You insulted Bola Tinubu during the election, called him a drug baron, and a fraudster. Today, you’re singing his praises. Reno, you’re a shameless man!”

Supporters of El-Rufai also defended his move, claiming that the APC of today is no longer the party he once believed in. @LawalBello2 argued, “That story was three years ago. Can you, in all honesty, say that the APC of today still holds the values that made El-Rufai pledge loyalty?” Similarly, @Kamsjigs added, “The APC of today is not the true version of APC that he and others tirelessly brought to the limelight. Understand this and be at peace with his personal decision.”

Despite the widespread criticism, some users sided with Omokri’s stance. @Boss_Blawd sarcastically compared the two politicians, writing, “If El-Rufai is bad with integrity, Reno is worse.” Others simply found the entire exchange amusing, with @Designer reacting with nothing but laughing emojis.

While Omokri likely intended to highlight El-Rufai’s inconsistency, the overwhelming response has shown that many Nigerians see him as an equally unreliable political figure. In a landscape where political loyalties shift like the wind, it seems no one is safe from scrutiny—including those pointing the fingers.
