Despite Nasir El-Rufai’s move to SDP from APC, Adewole Adebayo has remained resolute, declaring that he has still decided to contest the 2027 presidential election.

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has declared his intention to run for the presidency again in 2027.

His announcement comes as several politicians are joining the party, including former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who recently left the All Progressives Congress (APC) after openly criticizing its leadership.

Following his defection, El-Rufai has been making efforts to attract more politicians to his new party, increasing speculation about the future direction of the SDP. Despite this, Adebayo remains confident that he will emerge as the party’s presidential candidate in the next election.

During an interview with Arise TV on March 14, 2025, Adebayo stated that he is not intimidated by the influx of high-profile politicians into the SDP. He emphasized that his presidential ambition remains firm and that all party members are aware of his intentions.

“Let us understand something. I don’t worry about that; everybody who is coming in knows I will run in 2027,” he said.

Dismissing any fears about competition, he added, “Any coward who will feel threatened by people coming to his party cannot be president.”

Meanwhile, Nasir El-Rufai has clarified that his decision to join the APC in the past was not influenced by former President Muhammadu Buhari, but rather by Pastor Tunde Bakare.

Speaking in an interview, El-Rufai explained that Bakare was the one who introduced him to Buhari and encouraged him to become part of the party.

However, he has now distanced himself from the APC, citing dissatisfaction with the party’s leadership and overall direction. He accused the party’s leaders of prioritizing personal interests over governance.

“The government is commercialized, everything has a price tag,” he alleged.

Expressing further frustration, he stated, “Justice has been kept at bay, those who worked for the party were ignored instead of being compensated. If there is any position or appointment, they give it to a Lagos boy, etc.”
