Sowore Escorts Corper NYSC Office

Nigerian activist Omoyele Sowore has accompanied NYSC corps member, Ushie Rita Uguamaye to her scheduled appearance before the Local Government Inspector (LGI) in Lagos.

This follows the controversy surrounding her recent remarks about the current administration. Sowore, along with legal representatives, stated that they were there to support her.

“The journey with youth Corper, Ushie Rita Uguamaye, has commenced in Lagos,” Sowore shared in a post. “She is scheduled to appear before the LGI today, and we will escort her to their offices. We are all en route with attorneys.”

The situation has sparked widespread reactions online, with many divided over Sowore’s involvement. While some praised him for standing up against what they see as oppression, others criticized him for allegedly encouraging lawlessness.

One user, @HM_HeadMaster, expressed strong support, saying, “Resistance is the only language oppressors understand, and Sowore always speaks the language of resistance.” Another user, @ben_samuel, described Sowore as “the only sane politician genuinely concerned about Nigerians’ struggles,” adding that he would vote for him despite electoral challenges.

However, not everyone saw Sowore’s actions in a positive light. @Ekiti_Princess1 accused him of “always being a cheerleader for indiscipline and lawlessness,” insisting that NYSC has rules and that those who break them should face the consequences. Similarly, @FobeCyril argued that this was “not Sowore’s fight” and that there were more pressing issues to address in Nigeria.

Concerns were also raised about possible repercussions for the corper. @faka11192 wondered if her service year would be extended, while @ivoh_ivoh suggested that she should be redeployed for her safety.

As the case unfolds, all eyes remain on the NYSC’s decision regarding Rita’s situation and the broader implications for freedom of expression within the scheme.
