Things To Know About Rivers Administrator, Admiral Ibas (Rtd)

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (Rtd) as the Administrator of Rivers State following the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara for six months.
In a nationwide address on Tuesday, Tinubu announced the decision, citing constitutional provisions to justify the suspension of the governor, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly amid the ongoing political crisis in the state.
Who is Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas?
- Former Chief of Naval Staff – Ibas served as Nigeria’s 22nd Chief of Naval Staff from 2015 to 2021.
- Military Background – He was born on September 27, 1960, and joined the Nigerian Navy in 1979, serving until his retirement in 2021.
- Educational Background – He attended Hope Waddell Training Institute, Calabar, and later the Nigerian Defence Academy. He also earned a master’s degree in defence and strategic studies from Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad, Pakistan.
- International Training – Ibas trained at top military institutions, including the Amphibious Warfare School of the U.S. Marine Corps University in Virginia and the National Defence College in Pakistan.
- Awards and Honors – His service earned him several recognitions, including the ECOMOG Medal and Forces Service Star. He was also conferred with the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
- Native of Cross River State – Ibas hails from Nko in Cross River State.
With his appointment as Rivers State Administrator, Ibas is expected to oversee the state’s affairs as the political turmoil unfolds.
