Tinubu Seeks Senate Approval For Five New INEC Commissioners (See List)
By Gideon Ayeni

President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the Senate to screen and confirm five nominees for the position of Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The request was conveyed in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, urging the lawmakers to expedite the confirmation process.
The nominees include:
Umar Yusuf Garba (Kano State)
Saad Umar (Bauchi State)
Chukwuemeka C. Ibeziako (Anambra State)
Umar Mukhtar (Borno State)
Dr. Johnson Alalibo Sinikiem (Bayelsa State)
Citing Section 154(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), Tinubu stated that the appointments align with constitutional provisions. He also noted that the letter supersedes an earlier communication sent on March 12, as he has now approved the reappointment of Umar Mukhtar for a second term as Borno State’s REC.
The President emphasized the need for a swift screening process to ensure the smooth operation of the electoral commission ahead of upcoming elections.
