Reps Rivers Fubara Suspension

The House of Representatives has approved a state of emergency in Rivers State and has endorsed the six-month suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and other officials.

The House of Representatives has given its approval for the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State with the vocal pro-Fubara House member Ikenga Ugochinyere and other elements aligned to him in the coalition of opposition parties keeping mum during the voice vote.

Along with this decision, the lawmakers also endorsed the six-month suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his Deputy Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the state assembly, as previously announced by the President.

During the Thursday session, the House deliberated on the emergency declaration and its implications. A member of the House raised concerns about whether the required two-thirds of lawmakers were present for the debate and requested a head count to confirm the quorum.

In response, the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, ruled that there was no need for a physical count. Instead, he stated that the attendance register would be used to confirm the number of members present.

“I want the house to note that today’s plenary is being attended by 243 members based on our attendance register. Just for the record, we’ve more than satisfied the requirement for this particular amendment,” the Speaker declared.
