Nigerian Governor Loses Mother, 93

The mother of Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, Hajiya Sarafa’u Umaru, has passed away at the age of 93.

Hajiya Sarafa’u Umaru’s death was confirmed in a statement on Sunday, March 23, 2025, by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Kaula-Mohammed.

“With profound sadness, the Government of Katsina State announces the passing of Hajiya Safara’u Umaru Baribari, the beloved mother of Governor Dikko Radda. She departed this world last night at the blessed age of 93,” the statement read.

Describing her as a woman of strength, dignity, and wisdom, Kaula-Mohammed highlighted Hajiya Sarafa’u’s significant role in shaping the lives of many, including her son, the state governor.

Her children also include Hajiya Hauwa Umar-Radda, the former wife of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, and Alhaji Kabir Umar-Radda, the current Village Head of Radda.

“A true Fulani matriarch, Hajiya Sarafa’u leaves behind a legacy that extends beyond her immediate family. Her values of integrity, perseverance, and community service continue to inspire all who knew her,” the statement added.

The late matriarch who was the mother of a governor and mother-in-law of another governor, Umaru Yar`Adua is set to be laid to rest in Radda village by 4 p.m. on Sunday.
